Engineering work is an essential part of maintaining and upgrading the rail network which we rely on every day. Find out why it's important here.
The majority of planned engineering work will take place overnight or at the weekend, but you can check our Upcoming engineering work section below to find out if you might be impacted by upcoming engineering work on our routes. The calendar shows planned engineering work impacting TransPennine Express services over the next 12 weeks.
If your journey is affected by engineering works, the calendar will show you any changes to train times, or if your service has been replaced by a rail replacement bus service.
We advise customers to always check their travel details before travelling to ensure the most up to date journey information has been received.

Weekends from Saturday 5 September to Sunday 13 September between Manchester Huddersfield and Leeds
Keeping you moving on weekends from Saturday 5 September to Sunday 13 September.
While we carry out work between Huddersfield and Leeds services will be affected, and no trains will run between Huddersfield and Dewsbury during this period. Some services will be diverted to keep you on trains for more of your journey. Where that isn’t possible, rail replacement buses will be available. Please read the information below carefully and check your journey before you travel.
TransPennine Express
Liverpool Lime Street to Newcastle: a split service will operate Liverpool Lime Street to Huddersfield, calling additionally at Lea Green and Stalybridge. The second part of the service operates between Leeds to Newcastle
Liverpool Lime Street to Hull: trains run between Dewsbury and Hull. Calling additionally at Batley, Morley and Cottingley. Please note that trains only call at Cottingley when travelling west towards Dewsbury

During this time, our teams will be:

While we carry out Tranpennine Route Upgrade work between Stalybridge, Huddersfield and Mirfield, train services will be affected. Services between Manchester Victoria and Dewsbury will be diverted via Brighouse, allowing customers to stay on trains for more of their journey. Where that isn’t possible, rail replacement buses will be available. Improvements are being delivered in two phases, with different travel arrangements during each phase. No trams will run directly between Manchester Victoria and Manchester Piccadilly from Monday 21 September to Friday 2 October due to Metrolink engineering works. Customers that need to travel between the two stations can take a short walk or hop on the free bus.
These improvements will increase capacity, support the introduction of electric trains and provide better journeys for customers for decades to come. During these works, we will:
• Renew the track and upgrade the drainage system in Gledholt tunnel, to the west of Huddersfield, to improve reliability.
• Add two new lines of track in the Deighton area, allowing faster direct services to overtake stopping trains and helping to deliver a more reliable railway.
• Continue to restore the historic roof at Huddersfield station, preserving its heritage while providing more shelter for customers.
• Upgrade the signalling and install overhead line equipment, preparing the railway for greener, quieter and faster electric trains in the future.

Due to engineering improvement works, there will be no TransPennine Express train services between Newcastle and Edinburgh/Dunbar.
LNER will run an hourly diverted rail service once per hour in each direction via Carlisle for longer distance customers between Scotland and England.
Rail replacement services will be in operation for local customers between Newcastle, Berwick Upon Tweed and Edinburgh.

Huddersfield - Sheffield:
Buses will replace trains between Huddersfield and Lockwood. A few late night / early morning trains will be extended to run between Huddersfield and Penistone.
On Sundays, buses will replace trains between Huddersfield and Barnsley.
Leeds - Manchester Victoria via Dewsbury:
Saturdays and Mondays to Fridays:
An amended service will run between:
- Leeds and Halifax via Dewsbury

Sundays:

Background information:
The Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) project is a multi-billion-pound programme of railway improvements which will bring better journeys to customers travelling across the Pennines between Manchester, Huddersfield, Leeds and York.
As part of this project, major improvement works are taking place between Stalybridge and Mirfield over a 16-day period. This includes:
- Track and drainage renewals in Huddersfield and Gledholt tunnels
- Installation of new track
- Improvements at Huddersfield and Deighton stations
- Installation of overhead line equipment

Travelling between Manchester stations
TransPennine Express operates a regular service which connects Manchester Piccadilly, Manchester Oxford Road and Manchester Victoria in both directions but this may not always be available due to service disruption or planned engineering work which is essential to maintaining the railway.
Please allow plenty of time to travel and make connections onto train services at other stations.
If a direct train service isn’t available, there are other options you can choose to travel between the major stations in Manchester city centre:

A separate ticket for Metrolink trams is required unless your ticket destination reads “Manchester CTLZ” or your train journey is wholly within Greater Manchester and requires connections between Manchester Stations, including between Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Victoria (this does not include advance tickets).
